Whether performing at a wedding reception, corporate event, special party, or fund-raiser, the bandleader has an enormous responsibility. Only a skilled and experienced bandleader can seamlessly play the roles of musician, maestro, and event coordinator all in one.
During your special party, the music is always changing with the moment, being compatible with whatever is transpiring throughout the wedding reception. During all of this, the band leader should always be in the moment but also thinking ahead. This is as difficult as it sounds.
An experienced and effective bandleader needs to spontaneously plan for the next moment, coordinating with the maître d’, and event planner, feeling the pulse and creating energy when needed, and at the same time leading the musicians in the band.
The band members need to perform at the highest level of musicianship. They must look good and dress appropriately and keep the party going in high gear for many hours.
A successful party has everything to do with the songs that are chosen to be performed at the right time, and as accurately as possible. The goal is to play the song as good or better than the original record.
The bandleader’s skill and intuition in reading the “crowd” is crucial and as important as leading the band. It’s the music that energizes the party, and it’s the skill of an experienced band leader that brings all these variables to the party to come alive.
Meet Sid Miller
Sid is an expert in crafting exceptional live wedding receptions, and special parties such as anniversary parties, and corporate events. As a result of performing and leading his band at more than 1200 upscale special events, Sid knows event management inside and out.
Sid has a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Temple University and has completed postgraduate work at the University of the Arts and the Berklee College of Music.
What Sid Does Best
He is a flutist, saxophonist, and vocalist. Sid is also a songwriter. One of his songs, “Come and Share My Love” was recorded by the Grammy-nominated band, Cintron on their album, Cintron Absolutely”.
Sid has performed with a wide range of internationally known artists including drummer and producer Norman Conners (You Are My Starship reached #4 on the Billboard Top R&B chart). He has also performed with Grammy-nominated bassist, and producer Jamaaladeen Tacuma as well as former guitarist, producer, and songwriter for Grover Washington Jr., Richard Lee Steacker.
Sid’s high-profile venues include the Robin Hood Dell and Madison Square Garden, and he has made appearances on regional television stations including KYW and WPVI.
During the first years of his professional career, Sid lead his band, Siembra, across the country, playing original ”World Beat” music. His band performed at the Kool Jazz Festival in New York City and Washington D.C. with Grammy Award winner, Wynton Marsalis, as well as performing in New Orleans and Houston with Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff, on the Benson and Hedges Music Gallery.
Sid’s Expertise the Leader of a Live Band for Weddings
Border’s Book Store asked Sid to share his expertise with prospective brides at a seminar they held, and Sid has published several informative articles about live wedding events that appeared in wedding magazines including Modern Bride and the Jewish Exponent.
He has also been chosen to be a member of the National Register’s Who’s Who in Professionals, which is part of the United States Chamber of Commerce and is registered with the Library of Congress.
Sid’s ability to find, mentor, and refine talent led many of his vocalists to very productive careers nationally. Vivian Green achieved Gold Status with her debut album on Columbia Records. She was also featured in the movie staring Kevin Kline, entitled “DE-Lovely”
Another of his vocalists, Patrice Hawthorne, toured as Peaches of Peaches and Herb. (triple Platinum hit song “Reunited”). Nicole Morris, Sid Miller Dance Band’s first vocalist, has toured in the hit musical “Dream Girls”, and vocalist and record producer, Jayar, has toured with Grammy award winner, George Benson.
